Permit to Work (PTW) is a legal and mandatory process used in hazardous processes across many industry lines. Work Permit Process is initiated when a Maintenance work or Operation work has to be performed in the plant and safe working conditions have to be adhered. Work order is prepared by the maintenance / Operation department and based on the delegation of authority of the organization, the permit is either approved or rejected.

Various IT applications and ERP system manages the process of permit to work with a close integration to Asset maintenance process. To carry out maintenance work orders that are generated based on corrective, predictive or planned maintenance process in the IT applications, PTW process automatically becomes an important and integral part of the maintenance cycle.

Type of Work Permits

1. Hot Work permit: The permit requires an individual to carry out hot work such as welding, drilling , gas cutting etc. the risk associated with this process is higher. The permit is issued for very short time and involves multiple approvers.

[if !supportLists]2. [endif]Confined Space Entry : The permit requires an individual to carry out enclosed space entry to inspect or to repair the defective parts in tanks, or to perform cargo measurements in Oil tanker and so on. The permit is issued for very short time and involves multiple approvers and multiple persons need to be involved in the process execution. .

[if !supportLists]3. [endif]Cold Work : This permit type is usually issued to perform basic work as as scaffolding, grass cutting , excavation, etc. The risk associated with this permit is lowest.

What can Machine Learning Do with Permits is an interesting question........

We did an analysis and application of PCA ( principal component Analysis ) on the permit Data and realized that you can actually measure most important features in the Permit data and can thus ensure that permits must contain those features before they are approved and maintenance work can begin...
